How to Stretch Canvas or Linen

Sometimes you may need to stretch your own canvas or linen. This is a video tutorial that shows you how I stretch mine. The reasons an artist might do this could be as follows:

• To create a specific size that isn't available in store
• To use a heavier or finer quality material eg, 14oz canvas or extra fine Belgium linen.

Below are some differences between canvas and linen. Choosing one over the other can come down to personal preference in the end, however, for a nicer surface to paint on, linen is the winner.

List of materials:

Mallet or soft hammer

Staple gun & Staples

Tape measure

Stretcher bars

Stretcher cloth pliers (mine are by Monte Marte)

Canvas/Linen
